Aetheria

$1,960.00

Aetheria is an original abstract floral painting by New Zealand artist Sue Mac Dougall. The work bursts with vibrant hues and fluid forms, capturing the essence of Aetheria’s ethereal beauty. The name Aetheria has its root in the Greek word aether meaning “upper air” or “heavenly substance,” combined with the Latin suffix “-ia,” signifying a realm or state. It conveys a celestial, light-filled realm — purity, lightness, and the freedom of flight. This connection to the upper air also evokes the graceful flight of butterflies, which depend on that same realm to exist. Each bloom suggests the mysterious and enchanting spirit of this fantastical world. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth, inviting viewers to explore its hidden layers and feel the whispering secrets of Aetheria’s flora.

What makes this work truly exceptional is the distinctive finish Sue has developed. The painting is sealed in resin, giving the colours a luminous depth, while the deep box frame is clad in radiant gold-mirrored stainless steel edges. These reflective sides catch the light and shift with the viewer’s perspective, transforming the artwork into something more than a painting — a sculptural presence that alters and enriches the space around it. Few artists work in this way, making each piece not only visually striking but also rare and highly individual.

At 120cm x 80cm, Aetheria has a commanding scale that intensifies its vibrancy and makes it a powerful centrepiece in any collection or space.
